A washer that refuses to spin leaves you with a heavy, soaked load. Rule out these three causes before assuming something major has failed.
Unbalanced Load
Most machines will refuse to spin a lopsided load outright, as a way of protecting the bearings.
Fix: Lift the lid, rearrange the laundry so it's evenly spread, and restart the spin.
Faulty Lid Switch or Door Lock
The washer won't spin at all unless it detects the lid or door is securely shut.
Fix: A failed lid switch or door interlock is a common, inexpensive part to swap.
Broken or Worn Drive Belt
On belt-driven machines, a belt that's stretched out or snapped lets the motor spin freely without ever turning the drum.
Fix: Once the cabinet is opened up, a technician can replace the belt in short order.
