Oven Temperature Off? How to Calibrate It

If your oven consistently runs hot or cold, a standalone thermometer and the built-in calibration setting close most of that gap.

Ovens naturally drift out of calibration over time. Before assuming something's broken, measure the actual temperature and recalibrate from there.

Measure With a Separate Thermometer

The number on the display is only as accurate as the sensor feeding it.

Fix: Hang a standalone oven thermometer in the center rack and compare it to the setpoint after a complete preheat.

Use the Calibration Offset

Nearly every oven lets you nudge the displayed temperature up or down from the settings menu.

Fix: Dial in an offset to close the gap you measured — typically within about ±35°F.

Replace a Failing Sensor

A gap that's large or inconsistent from bake to bake points to a sensor that's actually failing, not just drifting.

Fix: A replacement sensor is a low-cost, routine repair.
