Dryer Won't Turn On: Power and Switch Checks

A dryer with zero response is usually a power issue, a door switch, or a start switch — the motor is rarely the actual problem.

When absolutely nothing happens, look upstream of the motor first. Work through these checks in order.

Power Supply

Electric dryers rely on a 240V double-pole breaker, and a partial trip on just one side can leave the unit completely dead.

Fix: Fully reset the breaker and make sure the cord is seated properly in the outlet.

The dryer won't start at all unless the door switch confirms the door is shut.

Fix: Listen for a click as the door closes; a failed switch is an inexpensive part to replace.

Either a failed start switch or a blown thermal fuse can block the dryer from starting altogether.

Fix: A technician tests both with a multimeter and replaces whichever one has failed.
