Lint Near the Heating Element
Lint that escapes the trap can settle directly on the heating element and scorch.
Fix: Clean out the lint trap housing thoroughly, along with the area surrounding the element.
Overheated Belt or Bearing
A drive belt that's worn out, or a bearing that's seized, generates friction and a distinct rubbery burning odor.
Fix: Replace whichever drive component has worn out before running the dryer again.
Electrical Fault
A smell closer to melting plastic can signal a failing motor or wiring that's scorched.
Fix: Stop using the dryer immediately and have a professional inspect the motor and wiring.
