Cloudy Glasses From the Dishwasher: Hard Water or Etching?

A hazy film that wipes away is hard water; cloudiness that won't budge is permanent etching. Here's the simple test to tell them apart.

Cloudy glassware has two very different causes, and telling them apart takes about five minutes.

Test Which One It Is

Drop a cloudy glass into a bowl of white vinegar and let it soak for five minutes.

Fix: If the haze wipes off after soaking, it's hard-water buildup; if it's still there, you're dealing with permanent etching.

Houston's municipal water carries a heavy mineral load, and it leaves a chalky film behind on glassware.

Fix: Add a rinse aid, consider a water-softening additive, and go easy on the detergent dose.

Etching happens when too much detergent, unusually soft water, and high heat combine.

Fix: Cut back on detergent, skip the pre-rinse, and run a gentler cycle for glassware specifically.
