How Much Detergent Should You Really Use?

Overdosing on detergent is one of the most common root causes behind a smelly washer and residue left on clothes.

Use HE Detergent in HE Machines

High-efficiency machines use a fraction of the water older models do, so standard detergent produces way too many suds.

Fix: Stick to HE-rated detergent and fill only to the line marked for HE loads.

Detergent packaging tends to encourage overuse, and the extra suds just redeposit onto your clothes.

Fix: Try starting with half the recommended dose and only increase it if you actually need to.

Softened water lathers more easily, so the same amount of detergent produces noticeably more suds.

Fix: Cut your dose back further if your home runs on a water softener.
