Whether an appliance gives you 8 years or 15 almost always comes down to routine care rather than the luck of the draw. These eight habits make the biggest difference.
1. Vacuum the Refrigerator Coils Once a Year
A dust-covered condenser forces the compressor to work overtime. Ten minutes with a vacuum brush once a year takes real strain off the compressor and stretches its lifespan.
2. Don't Pack the Washer Full
Cramming the drum puts extra load on the bearing and motor. Keep it to around three-quarters capacity so clothes — and water — can actually move.
3. Clear the Dryer Vent Annually
A restricted vent is the single biggest cause of dryer fires nationwide. Whether you hire it out or do it yourself with a long flexible brush, get it done once a year.
4. Run a Cleaning Cycle in the Dishwasher Monthly
An empty cycle with a dishwasher-safe cleaning tablet, or a cup of white vinegar set on the top rack, dissolves the mineral scale that clogs spray arms and drags down pump performance.
5. Watch Your Detergent Dose
HE washers need only a small amount of HE-rated detergent. Overdo it and you get excess suds the machine has to fight through, which stresses the pump and invites mold in the door seal.
6. Close the Oven Door Gently
The hinges on an oven door take constant heat cycling as it is. Slamming it shut speeds up hinge wear and can crack the glass panel over time.
7. Wipe the Fridge Gasket Every Few Months
A quick wipe-down with warm, soapy water keeps the door seal supple enough to seal properly. Left dirty, it stiffens and cracks, letting warm air leak in and quietly driving up your electric bill.
8. Keep the Washer and Dishwasher Level
An out-of-level washer shakes harder than it should, wearing the bearing down faster. An unlevel dishwasher pools water in one corner and overworks the pump. A few minutes with a spirit level and the adjustable feet fixes both.
