Cleaning the dryer vent is the most skipped safety task in most homes, and clogged vents are responsible for thousands of house fires every year.

The Annual Rule

Lint works its way into the duct regardless of how diligently you clean the lint screen.

Fix: Clear the entire vent run at least once a year, and twice if your household runs several loads a week.

Longer-than-normal dry times, a dryer that's hot to the touch on top, and any hint of a burning smell all point to a restricted vent.

Fix: Catch any of these and clean the vent before you run another load.

A brush kit works fine for short, straight vent runs, but long runs or anything going through the roof are better left to a professional.

Fix: While you're at it, swap any plastic accordion ducting for rigid metal.
